{"id":159,"date":"2015-01-24T19:31:55","date_gmt":"2015-01-25T00:31:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/?p=159"},"modified":"2015-02-01T15:46:31","modified_gmt":"2015-02-01T20:46:31","slug":"the-youbees-last-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/?p=159","title":{"rendered":"The YouBee&#8217;s Last Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I launched my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketreviews.com\/scratch---youbee.html\">YouBee<\/a>, a 12-foot tall upscale of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketreviews.com\/break-away---oddl-rockets.html\">Odd&#8217;l Rocket&#8217;s Break Away<\/a> rocket, on a CTI L1115 motor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandorocketry.com\/nefars-bunnell-blast-2014\/\">NEFAR&#8217;s Bunnell Blast<\/a> on November 9.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2014-11-09 Roger Smith&#039;s YouBee on a CTI L1115\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z09oN_de6g0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The rocket reached about 5000 feet in altitude.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the main parachute deployed at apogee. The rocket was designed to break apart, like the Break Away, then fall in a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketreviews.com\/wacky-wiggler---estes-2182-2003-2005.html\">Wacky Wiggler<\/a>&#8221; style for a few thousand feet before the parachute opens.\u00a0 Instead, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketreviews.com\/120-standard-nylon-parachute.html\">10-foot Top Flight parachute<\/a> came out at apogee which caused the rocket to drift about two miles before landing in some tree tops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10873411_10205754661451962_7098597869755746244_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-161\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10873411_10205754661451962_7098597869755746244_o-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"YouBee in a Tree\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10873411_10205754661451962_7098597869755746244_o-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10873411_10205754661451962_7098597869755746244_o-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10873411_10205754661451962_7098597869755746244_o-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10873411_10205754661451962_7098597869755746244_o.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The rocket spent almost six weeks in the wild before a couple of local hunters found it and returned it to me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10882385_10205754662571990_1858749780144449395_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-162\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10882385_10205754662571990_1858749780144449395_n-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"YouBee in an ATV\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10882385_10205754662571990_1858749780144449395_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10882385_10205754662571990_1858749780144449395_n-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10882385_10205754662571990_1858749780144449395_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>At first I was pleased with how good the rocket looked after spending weeks outdoors including days of very heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>I left the rocket in the garage to dry out for several weeks before I finally got around to taking a closer look at it.\u00a0 When I did, I discovered that the wetness had dissolved the glue holding the layers of paper together in the cardboard tubes.\u00a0 The tubes can be easily unraveled, peeled open like the wrapper around a can of Pillsbury refrigerator biscuits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10878565_10205760478597387_623241874_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-165\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10878565_10205760478597387_623241874_o-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"YouBee Recovered\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10878565_10205760478597387_623241874_o-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10878565_10205760478597387_623241874_o-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/blog.payloadbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/10878565_10205760478597387_623241874_o.jpg 603w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a>When I opened the electronics bay, I found that the inside was still very wet.\u00a0 I removed the battery. The clips in the battery holder snapped off.\u00a0 They had rusted through.\u00a0 I wiped off the altimeter then set it aside to dry.\u00a0 When it was dry, I hooked up a new battery to it, but it wouldn&#8217;t turn on,<\/p>\n<p>I was able to remove the tube from the fin section leaving the fin can intact.\u00a0 That&#8217;ll give me a head start when I decide to rebuild the YouBee.<\/p>\n<p>But, I&#8217;m going to retire the YouBee, at least for now.\u00a0 Instead, I&#8217;ve decided to build a 4&#8243; diameter upscale of the Break Away which should end up about eight feet tall.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll be easier to prep and launch than the big one and will fly on smaller, less expensive motors.\u00a0 Eventually, though, I may decide to rebuild the YouBee.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I launched my YouBee, a 12-foot tall upscale of the Odd&#8217;l Rocket&#8217;s Break Away rocket, on a CTI L1115 motor at NEFAR&#8217;s Bunnell Blast on November 9.
